Barcelona president Joan Laporta has heaped praise on Lionel Messi for what he described as an “extraordinary” 2026 World Cup campaign with Argentina. Speaking from Dallas ahead of the semi-finals, Laporta also shared his thoughts on the impressive displays of Lamine Yamal and Anthony Gordon.

Messi inspiring Argentina’s World Cup charge once more

At 39 years of age, Messi’s remarkable consistency has been one of the defining stories of the 2026 World Cup. The Inter Miami forward leads the tournament’s scoring charts with eight goals in six matches, continuing to demonstrate his world-class quality. Despite his advancing years, Messi’s fitness remains exceptional, and his performances have propelled Argentina toward another possible world title. In the process, he has also become the top scorer in World Cup history with 21 goals.

Laporta captivated by Messi’s brilliance

Laporta admitted that he remains in awe of Messi’s continued influence for Argentina throughout the North American tournament. The iconic number 10 has once again been the driving force behind the Albiceleste, playing with the same clinical precision that defined his illustrious Barcelona career.

Addressing reporters in Dallas, Laporta was full of admiration for the legendary forward. “Messi’s World Cup is extraordinary. Eight goals, some of them of great quality, and his talent always shines through. Argentina works for Messi and is a compact unit; they are lucky to have Leo, who always delivers,” said the Barcelona president.

Yamal and Barcelona’s current stars impressing internationally

Laporta also took the opportunity to commend the performances of Barcelona’s current generation making their mark on the global stage, including Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. He expressed pride in how the club’s players have represented both Barcelona and their national teams during the tournament.

“I fully support all our Barcelona players participating in the World Cup,” Laporta said. “Their success is our success. Lamine is having a fantastic World Cup—he’s been named MVP in a couple of matches. The others, too—Pedri, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsi—they’ve all been performing excellently.”

Gordon’s impact gaining recognition

Laporta also highlighted the form of Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle earlier this summer. The England international has impressed with his creative displays, playing a key role in England’s journey to the semi-finals.

Commenting on Gordon’s contribution, Laporta noted: “He’s doing very well. The other day against Norway, he provided the assist for one of Bellingham’s goals, and it was an excellent pass.”

England are set to face defending champions Argentina in the semi-finals, while Yamal and Spain will take on France in the other last-four clash.
