Newcastle United may face a tough challenge in keeping hold of Lewis Hall, as the young defender is reportedly drawn by the possibility of working under Michael Carrick at Manchester United.
Hall was among the standout left-backs in the Premier League last season. BBC pundit Danny Murphy’s praise, calling him a “terrific player,” was well deserved, given the consistency and maturity he displayed throughout the campaign.
Despite his impressive form during the closing stages of the 2025–26 season, Hall saw limited game time. When he did feature, Newcastle often deployed him out of position at right-back, a move that raised eyebrows among supporters and analysts alike.
This positional shift is believed to have contributed to Hall’s omission from England’s World Cup squad, leaving the 21-year-old frustrated with manager Eddie Howe. Reports suggest that this has led to growing tension between the player and the Newcastle boss.
As a result, speculation has intensified over Hall’s potential departure from St James’ Park, with Manchester United emerging as a leading contender for his signature.
Although United’s current transfer focus remains on strengthening the midfield, those connections with Hall have not completely disappeared. In fact, sources indicate that the player himself is pushing for a move to Old Trafford.
According to TeamTalk’s recent coverage of United’s search for a left-back to provide cover for Luke Shaw—who cannot be expected to play every match as he did last season—Hall views the opportunity to work under Carrick as a major draw.
“Sources indicate the 21-year-old sees the opportunity to work under Carrick and establish himself at United as hugely attractive,” the report states. “Hall is understood to be comfortable arriving initially to compete with Luke Shaw before eventually succeeding the England international as the club’s long-term first-choice left-back. That pathway is viewed as a major selling point. United’s pursuit also reflects a wider change in their squad planning, as sources can explain.”
It is understood that INEOS, the club’s ownership group, is prioritising players who genuinely wish to be part of their project. This approach has already influenced several transfer decisions.
Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, both high-profile targets, were not pursued further due to their lack of enthusiasm for the move. Conversely, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans made their desire to join United clear and subsequently completed their transfers.
With Hall now demonstrating similar intent, and considering his proven Premier League pedigree, there appears to be little stopping the 20-time English champions from acting. Reports even suggest that Carrick has identified Hall as his top defensive target this summer.
If the deal materialises, Hall and Shaw could form an excellent partnership on the left flank. Securing Hall’s signature would not only strengthen United’s defence but also provide long-term stability in the left-back position for years to come.
