Manchester United are set to receive a significant financial boost following Mason Greenwood’s confirmed transfer to Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce, after football journalist Fabrizio Romano gave his famous ‘here we go’ confirmation to the move.

Despite a prolific spell at Olympique Marseille, where Greenwood scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists in 81 appearances, the Ligue 1 club decided to part ways with the forward this summer.

The 24-year-old’s stint at the Orange Velodrome was marred by behavioural concerns both on and off the field. The departure of manager Roberto De Zerbi in March was seen as a turning point, as the Italian coach had been one of Greenwood’s strongest backers, defending him amid criticism over his attitude and work ethic. Without De Zerbi’s support, the Bradford-born player reportedly clashed with the Marseille hierarchy.

Marseille therefore opted to entertain offers during the transfer window, with multiple clubs expressing interest despite Greenwood’s controversial history. Manchester United had sold the forward to Marseille in 2024 following serious legal troubles during his time at Old Trafford, a move that sparked protests in the French city upon his arrival.

AS Roma were initially among the frontrunners for his signature, motivated by manager Gian Gasperini’s admiration for the player. Atletico Madrid were also keen, with Diego Simeone searching for replacements for Antoine Griezmann and potentially Julian Alvarez.

However, Fenerbahce quickly took control of negotiations, having already initiated talks last month during the club’s presidential election at the Chobani Stadium. The Turkish giants first reached an agreement with Greenwood’s representatives, led by his father, before finalising terms with Marseille.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is valued at €40 million plus €2 million in performance-related add-ons (£34 million plus £1.7 million). Thanks to a substantial sell-on clause included when Greenwood was sold to Marseille, Manchester United are set to receive “over €10 million” (£8.5 million) from the transfer.

The move is expected to provide a welcome injection of funds for Manchester United during a crucial transfer window, as INEOS look to overhaul Michael Carrick’s midfield setup. The club has already secured a £50 million move for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos and completed the £35 million signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

Nonetheless, United are still searching for a marquee defensive midfielder to fill the void left by Casemiro. To facilitate another big-money signing in that position, every additional revenue stream will be critical — making the proceeds from Greenwood’s transfer particularly valuable.
