France head coach Didier Deschamps anticipates a fierce contest for possession when his team faces Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final, stating that both sides are capable of commanding the game in different ways, according to Reuters.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the high-profile encounter, Deschamps acknowledged Spain’s ability to dominate possession but expressed confidence in France’s ability to adjust their tactics based on how the match unfolds.
“Spain can apply a lot of pressure, but we are also a team who need the ball. There will be a battle for control,” Deschamps said, as quoted by Reuters.
The France coach emphasized Spain’s technical prowess while pointing to his own team’s ability to counterattack swiftly, maintain possession, and defend effectively.
“Spain have great quality on the ball. We have the qualities to attack quickly on the counter, to keep possession ourselves and to defend well. The course of the game will dictate things. I cannot say now exactly how the match will unfold,” he added, as quoted by Reuters.
Deschamps revealed that the 26-year-old midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni has not yet fully recovered from a hamstring injury but is available for selection. Tchouaméni was rested for the previous match against Morocco as a precaution.
“For the last match, the risk was too high,” Deschamps said. “He is better today, although we cannot say he is 100% recovered. His last game was two weeks ago, but that is not prohibitive. The important thing is that he is available,” the Les Bleus coach added, as quoted by Reuters.
Adaptation has been a key element of France’s consistent performance, according to Deschamps. “When you are a coach, the key word is adaptation,” he explained. “Football is not an exact science, but preparation and planning are always important, right down to the smallest detail.”
France have delivered the most convincing and controlled knockout-stage performances among the four remaining teams. After finishing top of Group I, they began the knockout rounds with a commanding 3–0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32.
They then edged out Paraguay 1–0 in a closely contested Round of 16 match before producing another disciplined display to win 2–0 against Morocco in the quarter-finals, securing their place in the semi-finals.
Through the knockout stages, France have scored six goals without conceding, demonstrating their defensive discipline and composure under pressure. Even in closely fought matches, their tactical structure has remained solid, while captain Kylian Mbappé has continued to provide decisive attacking contributions when it matters most.
