John Terry has made a bold prediction ahead of England’s crucial World Cup semi-final against Argentina, asserting that the Three Lions possess a more complete squad than the reigning champions. The former Chelsea captain believes Thomas Tuchel’s men have no reason to fear Lionel Messi and his accomplished South American side.

Terry confident about England’s squad strength

As England gear up for their historic encounter with Argentina, Terry offered an assertive evaluation of the upcoming tactical duel. The ex-defender argued that while Argentina have enjoyed sustained success in recent international competitions, England’s current lineup features unmatched individual talent within the tournament.

Speaking on the FIFA Podcast, Terry remarked that every player in England’s starting eleven surpasses his opposite number in the Argentine side. “I’m not worried about Argentina. When I look at them, I’m not concerned about them being better than us. Man-for-man, I believe we’re stronger than Argentina,” he said confidently.

England’s form versus Argentina’s experience

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have been leading England’s attack, both netting six goals each, while Argentina have relied heavily on Messi’s brilliance to advance through the knockout rounds.

However, Terry acknowledged that Argentina’s experience in high-pressure matches could play a crucial role in Atlanta. “The experience they have at these later stages could be an advantage for them,” he noted, referring to Argentina’s core group that has secured four consecutive major titles.

Only five players from England’s current squad — Harry Kane, John Stones, Jordan Pickford, Marcus Rashford, and Jordan Henderson — were part of the team that reached the World Cup semi-finals eight years ago.

Keeping Messi in check

The semi-final’s spotlight inevitably falls on Messi, who will face England for the first time in a competitive senior game. Although still Argentina’s main creative force, former England defender Gary Pallister suggested that the 39-year-old is now more human compared to his prime years.

Terry, meanwhile, likened Messi’s impact to that of his former Chelsea teammate Eden Hazard. “He’s one of those special players who always delivers in big moments. You look at Argentina against Egypt — they looked finished, but when you have someone like him, he changes everything. It reminds me of Hazard at Chelsea,” Terry explained.

He added, “With players like him, you always feel you can come back into the game, even when you’re 1-0 or 2-0 down. They’re extraordinary, and Messi is exactly that for Argentina.”

Rising optimism in the England camp

Terry isn’t the only former star tipping England for success. Joe Cole also predicted a Three Lions win, claiming that Tuchel’s men have the pace and power to outplay Messi’s team. The overall atmosphere around the England camp exudes optimism, with many believing that the country’s six-decade-long wait for a major international triumph could soon be over.

England head into the clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium with 13 goals scored in the tournament, while Argentina’s defence has looked vulnerable, conceding five goals in their last three knockout matches. With both teams brimming with elite talent, the semi-final promises to be one of the most anticipated encounters in World Cup history.
