Leeds United have expressed interest in Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, but the Italian shot-stopper appears inclined to continue his career in Turin rather than seek a move away this summer.
Manager Daniel Farke and his coaching staff have intensified their search for reinforcements in goal after Karl Darlow joined Manchester United on a free transfer following the end of his contract, and Illan Meslier also departed from Elland Road.
Another goalkeeper, Lucas Perri, could soon follow them out of the club, with Serie A side Torino reportedly exploring a deal to sign the Brazilian. Consequently, Leeds might need to secure at least two new goalkeepers before the transfer window closes.
The Yorkshire club have been pursuing Japan international Zion Suzuki since last month. Although Suzuki is said to remain uncertain about a move to Elland Road, Leeds have persisted in their efforts to secure his signature.
However, Leeds are not alone in their pursuit. Aston Villa have also shown strong interest in Suzuki, posing a significant threat to Leeds’ hopes of landing the highly rated keeper.
In light of that, the Whites have begun identifying backup options and have now turned their attention towards Di Gregorio, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport.
Juventus are understood to be open to offers for Di Gregorio, having been assessing their goalkeeping options since May in preparation for the upcoming season.
Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the 26-year-old, and their new manager Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly a big admirer of the Juventus goalkeeper.
Despite Spurs’ interest, they have yet to make a formal approach, leaving Leeds with an opening to make the first decisive move in the transfer race.
Nonetheless, Di Gregorio’s own determination could prove a stumbling block for potential suitors. The Italian is said to be ready to ‘fight for his chances’ at Juventus, even if it means starting the campaign as the club’s second-choice keeper.
Therefore, if Leeds decide to move forward with their interest, persuading Di Gregorio to accept the transfer could become as critical as agreeing terms with the Bianconeri.
Meanwhile, Juventus remain intent on recruiting a new first-choice goalkeeper and continue their pursuit of Emiliano Martinez. That chase has reportedly become complicated, as Aston Villa have been left ‘annoyed’ by Juve’s transfer approach regarding the Argentine international.
Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is another name under consideration by Juventus, with manager Luciano Spalletti already initiating direct contact regarding a potential deal.
Given Juventus’ willingness to sanction Di Gregorio’s departure, Leeds may find negotiating with the Serie A giants relatively straightforward. However, whether the Yorkshire side ultimately choose to act on their interest remains to be seen.
