New Delhi: Mahindra’s Chakan plant in Maharashtra has produced its three-millionth vehicle, with the BE 6 electric SUV becoming the milestone unit. The facility began vehicle production in December 2009 and has now crossed the latest production mark in July 2026.
The pace has increased sharply in recent years. Mahindra said the newest one million vehicles were built in 27 months. The first one million took 107 months. For an automobile plant that handles electric SUVs, petrol and diesel models, and commercial vehicles, that is a big jump in output.
Mahindra Chakan plant reaches three million vehiclesThe Chakan manufacturing hub covers 657 acres and currently produces 19 models and more than 450 variants.
The plant supports three main vehicle groups:
- Internal combustion engine passenger vehicles
- Electric vehicles
- Commercial vehicles
The BE 6 rolling out as the three-millionth unit also shows how Mahindra is placing electric vehicles inside its larger manufacturing system, rather than keeping EV production fully separate.
Robots and digital checks support productionMahindra’s Chakan facility uses nearly 1,500 robots. The body shop has more than 98 per cent automation, according to the company.
The plant also uses 3D component scanning, weld monitoring and digital tracking systems. Autonomous mobile robots move materials across the shop floor, reducing the need for manual transport between production areas.
Artificial intelligence-based systems are used to check whether workers are wearing required safety equipment. The company also uses connected machines and 5G systems to track manufacturing activity.
Renewable energy and water useMore than half of the plant’s total energy requirement comes from renewable sources. Mahindra said electric vehicle manufacturing at Chakan runs on 100 per cent renewable energy.
The facility is water positive and returns the equivalent of 131 per cent of the water it uses back to nature. Annual rainwater recharge stands at around 9.91 lakh kilolitres.
Mahindra also said the plant has received Zero Waste to Landfill certification.
Vehicles made at Chakan are sold in India and exported to markets including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The three-million production mark now gives Mahindra a fresh benchmark as it expands both electric and conventional vehicle output.
