Rohit Sharma Looking for a Big Knock

Former captain Rohit Sharma will also be under pressure to deliver a significant innings.

Since stepping down from captaincy, Rohit has adjusted his batting style, moving away from the ultra-aggressive approach that once defined his white-ball cricket. While he has remained consistent, he has yet to produce the match-winning knocks expected from a player of his stature.

The veteran opener has scored 563 runs in 13 ODIs since October last year, averaging 46.91, with one century and four half-centuries. Although the numbers are respectable, competition for places has intensified, making every innings increasingly important.

Virat Kohli Continues Outstanding ODI Form

Unlike Rohit, Virat Kohli enters the match in exceptional form.

The former India captain has amassed 621 runs in 10 ODIs since October 2025 at a remarkable average of 77.62, including three centuries and three fifties. His consistency has cemented his place as the backbone of India's batting lineup.

Bumrah, Axar and Sundar Boost India's Confidence

India were encouraged by Jasprit Bumrah's successful return to ODI cricket after his first appearance in the format since the 2023 World Cup final. The pace spearhead looked sharp with both the new and old ball, providing India with much-needed control.

The all-round performances of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar were equally impressive. Both remained unbeaten with half-centuries after Axar contributed significantly with the ball, giving India excellent balance heading into the second ODI.

India Could Tweak Playing XI

India may make changes depending on the conditions at Sophia Gardens.

Captain Gill had indicated after the first ODI that the management would continue selecting combinations based on venue conditions. Cardiff traditionally offers assistance to fast bowlers, which could see left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh replace Gurnoor Brar, who picked up two wickets in Birmingham but conceded 61 runs in nine overs.

If India opt for an additional seamer, wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav could once again miss out, with Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar expected to retain their places.
