The decision of exiled former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina to return to her country has brought a new uproar in the political circles from Dhaka to New Delhi. Ever since the Awami League supremo, who left the country and took refuge in India after the violent student protests in August 2024, has revealed her plans to return, the attitude of the interim and new government of Bangladesh has become very aggressive. Bangladesh administration has made it clear that as soon as Sheikh Hasina steps into Dhaka airport, she will be immediately arrested without giving any legal relaxation or chance to surrender. Home Minister’s strict stance: There is no scope for surrender, the court’s order will be followed 100 percent. According to Bangladesh’s prestigious newspaper ‘The Daily Star’, the country’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed made the government’s intentions clear while talking to the media after a high-level meeting on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. The Home Minister said in blunt words, "There is no legal scope left for Sheikh Hasina to surrender or get any kind of relief. As soon as the Awami League leader enters the Bangladesh border, the security agencies will take her into on-spot custody." He further added that all orders and non-bailable warrants issued earlier by the country’s apex court will be followed in letter and spirit and he will be sent directly to jail. Crime against humanity: Special court has awarded death sentence to Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina’s troubles are not limited to arrest only, but the strictest noose of the law is imposed on her. In November last year, a special tribunal court in Dhaka had convicted Sheikh Hasina, considering the alleged brutal action and use of force on protesters during the 2024 student movement as ‘Crimes Against Humanity’ and sentenced her to death. Since this historic judicial decision, the new administration of Bangladesh has been continuously demanding the official extradition of Sheikh Hasina from the Indian government so that action can be taken against her as per the court order. Sheikh Hasina’s emotional and bold statement: "Arrest or kill, I would prefer to die on my own soil."
Amidst this heavy legal and administrative pressure, Sheikh Hasina has expressed her bold intentions in an exclusive interview given to the international news agency Reuters. She has confirmed that she is making a strategic plan to go back to Bangladesh in the form of a mass march with key Awami League leaders and thousands of loyal workers around December 2026. Haseena said very emotionally, "I know that as soon as I reach there they can arrest me immediately and even take my life, but despite this I have to go back to my country. There is heavy repression on my party workers. Even if I die, I want it to come on the soil of my own motherland."
Bangladesh government’s open challenge: Bring the world’s best lawyers, justice will be done. Welcoming this big announcement of Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor on Information and Strategy Zahid Ur Rahman has issued a sharp statement. He said that the people of the country and the new government want to retain the death sentence awarded by the court at all costs. Rahman said sarcastically, "We welcome Hasina’s decision to return as it will make it easier for us to ensure justice. They may call the world’s biggest and best lawyers to defend themselves, but their punishment will be implemented as per the law of the country and the wishes of the victim’s families."
India’s strategic stance is clear: Extradition is a legal process, the decision will be taken according to the law. The Government of India, which is at the center of this entire high-profile international controversy, has also reiterated its official stand amid the news of Sheikh Hasina’s return. Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a press briefing held in New Delhi, "There has been no change in India’s policy and stance on Sheikh Hasina’s issue since the beginning. Extradition of any individual is entirely a bilateral legal matter. Whatever steps will be taken in this matter, they will be decided within the framework of established international laws and legal agreements between the two countries." After this balanced statement of India, now the eyes of the whole world are fixed on this big political event taking place in December.
