Manchester United have shown strong interest in signing Carlos Augusto from Inter Milan, though they are set to face stiff competition from two Serie A rivals, as reported by Ben Jacobs.
Even though Luke Shaw managed to start every Premier League game last season, INEOS remains determined to strengthen the left-back position. The 30-year-old England international, who narrowly missed out on selection for the World Cup, has struggled with persistent injuries since joining Old Trafford back in 2013.
With the additional demands of Champions League football and the likelihood of extended runs in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Shaw will find it difficult to sustain playing multiple matches per week.
Patrick Dorgu has emerged as an obvious alternative for cover, but the Denmark international has been redeployed as an attacking winger by head coach Michael Carrick. Interestingly, he has scored in each of his three starts under the 44-year-old manager.
If Dorgu continues to be used in a more advanced role, bringing in a new left-back will become a top priority for next season. Meanwhile, the ongoing injury issues surrounding Matthijs de Ligt — who has not featured since November — suggest that United might also need to sign another centre-back.
Given these dual requirements, it is logical that the club have considered Augusto, a player often described as a 'Swiss Army knife' for his wide-ranging versatility.
Augusto joined Inter Milan in 2023, initially on loan before completing a permanent transfer the following year. During his time with the Nerazzurri, he has lifted two Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia.
The Brazilian international is naturally a left-back, but his adaptability allows him to operate as a wing-back, winger, or even in central defence when required at the San Siro.
Such versatility has made him a valuable asset for current manager Christian Chivu as well as former boss Simone Inzaghi. Over three seasons in Milan, the 27-year-old has averaged 33 appearances per campaign, highlighting his consistency and dependability.
According to Ben Jacobs, Manchester United, led by sporting director Jason Wilcox, “made an enquiry” in April to determine whether a summer move could be feasible. However, Inter Milan are reportedly reluctant to part with the São Paulo-born defender.
In an interview with The United Stand, Jacobs further revealed that AS Roma and Atalanta are also keen on signing Augusto, presenting additional challenges should United decide to intensify their pursuit.
Should Augusto make the switch to Old Trafford, he would not only provide valuable competition for Shaw but also offer extra depth in central defence and wide roles. In essence, he would be a shrewd addition for both the starting line-up and the broader squad.
The talkSPORT journalist also mentioned that West Ham United’s full-back Oliver Scarles has been discussed as another potential option. However, he clarified that this is “not developing” at present, as United’s “main priority” remains finding a first-choice left-back.
