Manchester United, after a slow start in their transfer pursuits, now seem poised to construct one of the most formidable midfields in Europe.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already elevated the technical quality at the centre of the pitch. Should an athletic defensive midfielder be added, this summer’s transfer business could easily be rated as close to flawless.

Aurelien Tchouameni was initially viewed as the dream signing for the holding midfield role. However, his departure from Real Madrid now appears improbable, with Los Blancos having presented him a new long-term contract that he has accepted.

With Tchouameni out of reach, United have shifted their focus towards his fellow countryman, Manu Kone.

Kone ranks among the most talented defensive midfielders available. He combines dynamism with exceptional press resistance, impressive ball-carrying ability, physical prowess, and relentless defensive energy.

His performances with AS Roma had largely gone unnoticed until recently, but his outstanding displays at the World Cup have brought him into the global spotlight.

By stepping seamlessly into the role vacated by the injured Tchouameni during the World Cup, Kone has convinced many observers that he could be as valuable a signing as his compatriot.

Manchester United have already initiated contact regarding a potential transfer, though no formal bid has yet been made. That situation could change following the upcoming World Cup third-place play-off between France and England this weekend.

In that match, Kone will be facing several players who could soon be his teammates at Old Trafford if the deal goes through.

The French powerhouse will likely come up against Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson—two of the Premier League’s standout central midfielders.

Kone’s performance against them could be decisive, potentially convincing United’s scouting department to give INEOS the go-ahead to proceed with a major offer for the Serie A star.

However, while Kone could prove his worth with a top-class display against England, Manchester United will not be the only club monitoring him closely.

Both Aston Villa and Chelsea are also reportedly exploring the possibility of signing him, meaning competition for his signature could intensify after the tournament.

Ultimately, the outcome may depend on which club acts fastest to finalise a deal. Following his impressive performances on football’s biggest stage, Kone is expected to consider multiple offers carefully before deciding where to take the next step in his career.

Manchester United will hope he chooses to join them, as a midfield trio of Kone, Tielemans, and Santos could form a dominant partnership capable of controlling games across Europe.
