England midfielder Jude Bellingham has dismissed suggestions of any controversy surrounding his on-field exchange with Lionel Messi during England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final in Atlanta.

Argentina secured a place in the World Cup final after producing a late comeback against England. Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead in the 55th minute. Still, the defending champions responded through Enzo Fernandez before Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal in stoppage time to seal victory.

Lionel Messi played a central role in Argentina's turnaround despite not finding the net himself. The Argentina captain provided assists for both goals, helping his side advance to a showdown with Spain.

During the first half, television cameras captured an animated conversation between Messi and Bellingham, leading to speculation about a possible disagreement between the two players. However, Bellingham later clarified that the discussion was related to a foul during the match.

"We were discussing a foul, actually. It was nothing bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal out of it. But it was nothing big really," Bellingham said.

"I thought there was a foul earlier, and he said: 'What about the one on me?' I said: 'You're strong enough to take it.' You know what I mean?"

The England midfielder also spoke positively about the opportunity to face Messi on football's biggest stage, describing it as a memorable experience despite the disappointment of defeat.

"It was a privilege to play against him. It was nothing like that against him. I'm obviously on the losing side, which hurts a lot. But a privilege to line up against one of the best," Bellingham added.

The semi-final remained closely contested for long periods. England took control early in the second half when Gordon converted Morgan Rogers' cross, but Argentina gradually increased the pressure as the match progressed.

Jordan Pickford made several important saves to preserve England's advantage, while Alexis Mac Allister struck the post as Argentina searched for an equaliser. The breakthrough arrived in the 85th minute when Messi picked out Enzo Fernández, who finished to make it 1-1.

Argentina completed the comeback deep into stoppage time. Messi delivered a cross into the area, and Lautaro Martinez headed home the winner, sending the reigning champions into the World Cup final.

Argentina will now face Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, while England will take on France in the third-place play-off.
