Will Bruno Guimaraes Make Arsenal’s Starting Line-up? Why Martin Odegaard Could Be Sold as Declan Rice Prepares to Take Over the Captaincy

Speculation continues to grow around Bruno Guimaraes potentially joining Arsenal, with former Gunners forward Jeremie Aliadiere explaining to GOAL how the Newcastle United midfielder could integrate into Mikel Arteta’s system – and possibly influence major decisions regarding Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice. Following their Premier League title triumph last season, Arsenal remain determined to strengthen their squad even further.

The Newcastle star, Guimaraes, could command a transfer fee of up to £100 million. Despite winning their first top-flight title in 22 years, the club hierarchy at the Emirates Stadium recognises that continued progress is essential. With rival clubs ready to spend heavily, Arsenal cannot afford to stand still.

Reinforcements are expected across all areas of the pitch, especially in defence and attack. Midfield is another area under review, with the club considering ways to inject more energy and creativity into the heart of the team.

This is where Guimaraes fits in. The Brazilian international has proven his worth in the Premier League during a five-year spell at St James’ Park. The 28-year-old is reportedly open to a fresh challenge, and Arsenal are believed to be interested if an agreement can be reached. However, Newcastle are likely to demand between £80 million ($108m) and £100 million ($135m) before sanctioning a sale.

Would Guimaraes walk straight into Arsenal’s starting XI? It would undoubtedly be a major investment of both faith and finances. When asked about this, Aliadiere – a member of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ squad, speaking on behalf of ToonieBet – told GOAL: “It’s a tricky one because you just finished the season with [Martin] Zubimendi, and even he couldn’t break into the team. Myles Lewis-Skelly came in unexpectedly and claimed that central midfield spot. But I don’t think Myles will begin next season in that role.”

He added: “If Guimaraes were to arrive, it would depend on who’s available at the start of the campaign since many players returning from the World Cup may not be ready immediately. But Guimaraes is a top player, pure quality.”

Aliadiere continued: “Where would he fit tactically? That’s difficult to determine. You’ve got Declan Rice already anchoring the midfield, Martin Odegaard excelling further forward, and [Eberechi] Eze capable of contributing effectively too. Would Guimaraes play as the number six, the most defensive of the trio? I’m not sure, since he enjoys pushing forward, scoring goals, and joining attacks. It’s tough to say how Arteta would integrate him, but having top players and strong competition is always a positive. Mikel will find a way to make it work.”

Meanwhile, with Arsenal also linked to Aston Villa playmaker Morgan Rogers, there are suggestions that Norwegian midfielder Odegaard could be sold to free up space in the squad’s crowded midfield.

Odegaard, who recently lifted a major trophy as club captain, would be a surprising departure. However, Aliadiere noted that such a move could lead to Declan Rice taking over the captaincy: “Looking at Martin’s Arsenal career, it’s been a mix of highs and lows – injuries, inconsistency, seasons where he needed time to recover his form. There’s been debate among fans about whether he should remain captain or whether Rice should take the armband. Changing captains while the current one is still at the club is always tricky.”

He went on: “Maybe the best solution would be if Martin decides to leave, the club receives a strong transfer fee, and everyone benefits. That would then allow Rice to step up as captain. Given the discussions among fans, it might be a scenario that satisfies all parties. But considering he lifted the trophy just months ago, you’d think he remains a central figure.”

Aliadiere concluded: “Arsenal must continue evolving because their rivals are doing the same and investing heavily. You can’t stand still or keep the exact same squad. Fresh energy and new players are vital to push forward and defend the Premier League title. So yes, it’s possible Martin moves on and a new face arrives.”

Odegaard, who remains under contract until the summer of 2028 and is only 27, would command a significant transfer fee – funds that could be reinvested to secure new targets. Guimaraes remains firmly on Arsenal’s radar, but whether he makes the switch from Tyneside before Arteta’s side open their 2026–27 campaign at home to newly promoted Coventry on August 21 – following their Community Shield clash with Manchester City – remains to be seen.
