Kolkata: A new and strict law has come into effect from today with the aim of curbing crime and anti-social activities in West Bengal. After the implementation of this law, the police will get more powers than before. The government says that this will effectively control incidents like organized crime, hooliganism and riots. At the same time, the opposition and some social organizations have also raised questions regarding this law.
What is the new Goonda Suppression Act?
The official name of this law is West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026. In common language it is being called anti-crime law or goonda suppression law. The government claims that this law has been brought to strengthen law and order in the state and ensure strict action against criminals.
Provision for detention for one year without trial
Under the new law, the police have been given the right to detain a suspect for a maximum of 365 days without filing a charge sheet or initiating a case. Apart from this, if any person’s property is considered to be acquired from crime then it can be confiscated.
If government or private property is damaged during riots or violence, then action can be taken to compensate for it by confiscating the property of the culprits or demolishing it.
You will also get the power to redistrict
Under this law, the police will also be able to order habitual criminals and anti-social elements to move out of a particular area or district. Not only this, if there is a suspicion of a possible crime or riot, the police can detain suspicious persons even before the incident occurs.
has been passed by the assembly
This bill was passed in the special session of the West Bengal Assembly on June 29. After this, after all the legal processes are completed, it has now been implemented in the state.
Government’s claim
The government says that with this law, strict action will be taken against criminals and public safety will be strengthened. BJP leaders claim that this will stop hooliganism and illegal activities and the property acquired from crime will be confiscated and used in the public interest.
