Tokyo. India’s star badminton player PV Sindhu has entered the semi-finals of the BWF Japan Open Super 750 badminton tournament.
Her quarterfinal rival and host former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan withdrew from the match due to injury, giving Sindhu a walkover.
With this victory, Sindhu has made it to the semi-finals of a Super 750 tournament for the first time since the Denmark Open of 2023. This is also their third semi-final in the year 2026, which shows their great comeback this season.
Sindhu, who started the season at 18th position in the world rankings, has now returned to the top-10 and is currently world number-9.
Chen Yufei will challenge in the semi-finals
Sindhu will face former Olympic champion and world number-4 Chen Yufei of China in the semi-finals. Chen entered the last four after defeating South Korea’s Sim Yu Jin 21-10, 21-12 in the quarterfinals.
So far 14 matches have been played between Sindhu and Chen, in which the Chinese player is ahead 8-6. The special thing is that Sindhu has lost consecutively in the last five matches.
In such a situation, the semi-final match will be a big challenge for Sindhu. If she wins this match, she will not only end her losing streak against Chen, but will also make it to the finals of a Super 750 tournament after almost three years.
