The match, scheduled at Soldier Field, was called off as hazardous air conditions caused by Canadian wildfires made it unsafe to proceed. League authorities have rescheduled the clash for October.

Debut halted by wildfire smoke

The marquee MLS fixture between the Fire and the Whitecaps at Soldier Field has been postponed to October 6 owing to extremely poor air quality in Chicago. Thick smoke drifting south from Canadian wildfires sent the city’s air quality index into dangerously unhealthy levels. In response, local officials ordered the closure of public beaches and swimming pools, while the park district cancelled all outdoor events to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

Club leadership emphasises health and safety

The Chicago Fire management expressed disappointment over the cancellation, particularly as it was set to mark the 37-year-old striker’s first professional appearance outside Europe.

“We share our fans’ disappointment, especially considering the excitement surrounding our first match back after the FIFA World Cup break and the expectation of welcoming over 40,000 supporters to Soldier Field,” stated Fire’s president of business operations, Dave Baldwin.

He continued, “This evening was meant to be a memorable occasion at Soldier Field. Although we understand the frustration this may cause, the health and safety of everyone must take priority. We thank our fans for their understanding and look forward to seeing them again soon.”

League loses global showcase moment

The postponement comes as a blow to Major League Soccer’s efforts to capitalise on the global spotlight between the World Cup semi-finals and final. The league had scheduled marquee showdowns during this window to attract international attention to North American football. The original fixture promised an enticing duel between Lewandowski and his former Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Muller, marking their 23rd competitive meeting as rivals.

Additionally, the delay disrupted a planned family reunion, as Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter was set to face his son, Sebastian Berhalter, a midfielder for the Whitecaps and an MLS All-Star.
