- Disclosure from Gadkari
Pure Petrol Rate: Currently, there is a lot of controversy about E20 petrol across the country. After Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari’s ethanol announcement, an aggressive atmosphere has been created across the country. Videos of various complaints about the effect of this E20 on cars are currently going viral on social media. All this has created a tense situation. Among these, Nitin Gadkari has commented on the ongoing debate regarding ethanol-blended petrol, i.e. E20. He said his aim is not to promote any one type of fuel. The aim behind this is to reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuel imports, reduce pollution and increase farmers’ income. In a recent interview to a media, Gadkari also made a big statement on the future price of pure petrol. He explained how much pure petrol could cost if it were available separately and how much cheaper ethanol-blended fuel would be.

How much will pure petrol cost?
In the interview, Gadkari has made an important comment about the current price of petrol and the increase in these prices in the future. “In the future, if consumers are given different options, the price of 100% petrol may reach around Rs 168 per litre, while the price of ethanol-blended petrol will be much lower. The government is buying ethanol at around Rs 54-66 per litre.”
Are ethanol-powered vehicles ready?
According to Gadkari, many auto companies have developed flex-fuel engines. These vehicles can run on 100% petrol, 100% ethanol or both. He claimed that many companies like Toyota, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Hyundai have already worked on this technology. Bajaj, TVS, Hero and Honda have also developed flex-fuel bikes.
Is E20 causing engine damage?
Regarding claims on social media that E20 petrol is causing engine damage, Gadkari said neither the government nor vehicle manufacturers have any concrete data to prove that E20 petrol is causing engine damage. He added that before implementing E20 in India, trials were conducted for several years and it was approved based on international standards.
How will farmers benefit?
In an interview, Gadkari said that farmers have benefited the most from the ethanol policy. According to him, the price of maize has increased from Rs 1,200 per quintal to Rs 2,600 to 2,800 per quintal. This has benefited the farmers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to the tune of approximately Rs 45,000 crore. Dues of sugar mills to farmers have also reduced significantly.
Emphasis on reducing pollution
Gadkari said that India spends lakhs of crores of rupees on petroleum imports every year. If the country transitions rapidly to biofuels and other fuels, import costs will be reduced, foreign exchange will be saved and pollution will also be reduced. India aims to become carbon neutral by 2070 and this goal requires other fuels like ethanol.
What does Gadkari say on the ethanol debate?
Regarding the ongoing protests against ethanol on social media, Gadkari said some people lack complete information, while others are spreading rumours. He added that the government had conducted thorough inquiries with auto companies, research institutes and technical institutes before implementing E20, so people should believe the truth instead of rumours.
