New Delhi, 18 July. Sonam Wangchuk, who was on indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, has been taken to Safdarjung Hospital. Today was the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike. On Saturday morning, citing the High Court order, Delhi Police removed him from the protest site at Jantar Mantar on medical grounds. At present, security has been tightened outside Safdarjung Hospital. Delhi Police teams are deployed inside and outside Safdarjung Hospital. Paramedical courses have also been deployed to prevent Sonam Wangchuk’s supporters from entering the hospital. However, Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali has reached Angmo Hospital.
He wrote on social media platform Earlier, Delhi Police faced opposition from protesters while taking Sonam Wangchuk to the hospital. There was also a minor scuffle between the policemen and the protesters.
They raised slogans against the government and police administration. The police team came down from the stage with Sonam Wangchuk from the crowd and brought her to the hospital via ambulance. At present, the situation at the protest site is under control and no untoward incident or disturbance has been reported. Police is taking necessary steps to maintain law and order. Delhi Police said in the ‘X’ post that as per the orders of the High Court and the advice of medical experts, in view of the deteriorating health of Sonam Wangchuk, she has been shifted to the hospital for necessary medical care.
Following the orders of the High Court, the protesters tried to create obstruction, leading to some chaos, but the police exercised great restraint and completed the entire process safely. We appeal to the protesters present at Jantar Mantar to vacate the place peacefully as soon as possible. Speaking to the media, New Delhi DCP Sachin Sharma said, “As per the orders of the High Court and as per the health condition and medical advice, Sonam Wangchuk has been taken to the government hospital for necessary medical treatment. She is currently under medical observation.”
