Aston Villa have completed the record signing of Switzerland’s midfield sensation Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg, following his standout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Premier League side confirmed the deal on Monday, with reports suggesting the transfer is valued at over £50 million. The 20-year-old joins Unai Emery’s squad as a key reinforcement following Youri Tielemans’ departure to Manchester United.
This move marks a milestone for both Aston Villa and Swiss football. According to Sky Sports, the reported fee surpasses the previous record for a Swiss player, set by Granit Xhaka’s transfer to Arsenal. It also becomes Villa’s most expensive signing, overtaking the €59 million paid for Amadou Onana from Everton in 2024.
Emery had identified Manzambi as a priority target as Villa strengthen their midfield ahead of another European campaign. The club successfully fended off interest from Newcastle United and several other European sides, with the young midfielder choosing to continue his development in the Midlands.
Manzambi arrives at Villa Park after a sensational World Cup run, where Switzerland reached the quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years. He contributed three goals and two assists in four matches before suffering a knee injury during training prior to the round of 16 clash against Colombia.
Announcing the transfer, Aston Villa said in an official statement: “Aston Villa is delighted to confirm the signing of Johan Manzambi. The 20-year-old Swiss international, who recently represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joins on a permanent transfer from SC Freiburg. One of Europe’s most gifted young talents, Manzambi played a key role in Freiburg’s run to the UEFA Europa League final last season, scoring in the semi-final that set up the showdown with Villa in Istanbul. Welcome, Johan!”
Speaking after completing his move, Manzambi expressed his excitement about joining the Birmingham-based club. “I’m very excited to be here and I believe we can achieve big things together,” he said. “It’s a huge club in England and they’re competing in the Champions League. I’ve already played against Aston Villa, and for me, it’s the perfect step. I hope to replicate my performances from the World Cup and my time at Freiburg. With the team, the coach and the staff, I’m confident I can do that.”
As Aston Villa prepare for a demanding season featuring Champions League football, Manzambi is expected to play a pivotal role in the heart of Emery’s midfield. The young Swiss star will now begin his adaptation to the Premier League, with expectations high for him to make an immediate impact.
