One of these is- Giloy. Giloy is used for everything from fever to increasing immunity, but excessive consumption can have adverse effects on health.
What is Giloy?
Giloy, also known as Amrita or Guduchi, is an Ayurvedic medicinal vine, which helps in improving the digestive system and increasing immunity. Giloy leaves are heart shaped and look like betel leaves. All parts of this plant are used in Ayurveda, but its stalk is considered the most beneficial.
Consumption of Giloy without doctor’s advice can be harmful
However, according to a study published in Hepatology Communications, the official journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, consuming Giloy without doctor’s advice and monitoring can cause damage to many organs including the liver. Investigation found that all the patients were suffering from chronic liver disease or liver failure.
Consuming Giloy in excess amounts leads to the formation of anti-nuclear anti-bodies in the body. These anti-bodies attack the liver cells and symptoms like acute hepatitis and autoimmune hepatitis start appearing.
Consume Giloy as per doctor’s advice
Experts say that consuming Giloy in limited quantity and as per medical advice is beneficial for health.
