New Delhi. There was a fierce clash between protesters and police in New Delhi on Monday during the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. According to police sources, more than 100 policemen and protesters were injured during this period, while more than 100 protesters were detained. More than 5,000 policemen were deployed in the capital to maintain law and order.

Clash escalated after attempt to break barricade

According to the police, the protesters tried to move forward by breaking barricades on Parliament Street and other sensitive areas. It is alleged that some protesters also pelted stones at the security personnel, after which the police resorted to lathi charge and released tear gas shells at many places. Protestors were detained from several areas including Sansad Marg, Patel Chowk, Constitution Club and Shastri Bhawan.

Tight security arrangements, traffic affected

Despite the imposition of Section 163 of the BNSS, thousands of people gathered in Central Delhi. Heavy security arrangements were made around Parliament, Central Vista and Connaught Place. Traffic was diverted on many roads and temporary restrictions were also imposed on entry and exit of some metro stations, due to which traffic jams persisted throughout the day.

Police refuted viral claims

Delhi Police rejected the claims viral on social media regarding assault on Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali Angmo and detention of COJPA founder Abhijit Deepke. Police termed both the claims as misleading and said that the matter is being factually investigated and legal action has been initiated against those involved in the violence.

Main demands of the protesters

The CJP protest was organized over demands like alleged irregularities in the NEET exam, resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, compensation to the families of students who allegedly committed suicide over exam- matters and release of social activist Sonam Wangchuk from the hospital.
