Genesis is exploring the idea of launching a compact premium electric vehicle as part of its plan to broaden its global line-up.

Currently, the smallest model in Genesis’s electric range is the 4.5-metre-long GV60 crossover, which leaves significant space in the line-up for a smaller offering below it.

The brand previously experimented with a compact electric model through the Genesis Mint concept, which was first unveiled in 2019. This concept demonstrated Genesis’s vision for a luxurious city-focused EV designed for urban environments and short commutes.

Peter Kronschnabl, Managing Director of Genesis Europe, said the company is now studying new market segments that could help expand its customer base. "We are evaluating this still but have nothing to confirm," he said when asked specifically about smaller models, particularly as parent company Hyundai is preparing to introduce its own smaller mainstream EV, the Ioniq 3.

He added, "For a brand that is evolving, it’s important for us to look into fast-growing segments where our presence could help us build and nurture long-term relationships with customers."

Kronschnabl emphasised that Genesis will only enter market segments that promise sustainable and long-term growth, rather than pursuing short-lived opportunities. He explained, "There are some niches. For instance, there’s not a real premium pick-up truck. But is that a segment we should enter? So there are segments where there may be white space, but they don’t necessarily make sense for us. You need to be very careful when exploring such white spaces and not just enter them because of a perceived short-term opportunity."

According to Kronschnabl, Genesis’s strategy is built around long-term development rather than quick wins. "The Genesis project is a marathon, not a sprint," he said. "We need to have the right products in place to ensure consistent brand growth. Therefore, the long-term vision takes precedence over short- or medium-term goals."
