Audi is preparing to unveil the all-new A2 this autumn, and the latest prototype images reveal that the car retains a clear visual connection with its predecessor from 1999.

This upcoming electric crossover aims to recapture the essence of the original supermini, both in design and purpose, as the German manufacturer revives the A2 nameplate after more than twenty years.

The official confirmation of the A2’s return was made during Audi’s annual media conference in March, marking a key step in the brand’s electrification strategy.

The newly surfaced images highlight the car’s distinctive lozenge-shaped roofline and smoothly contoured rear section—styling cues that defined the first-generation model.

Produced at Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, the new A2 electric vehicle will effectively succeed the outgoing A1 and Q2 models at the lower end of the brand’s line-up. Pricing is expected to start from just under £30,000.

According to CEO Gernot Döllner, the new A2 is central to Audi’s goal of making electric mobility accessible to a wider audience. “We’ve listened carefully. Our customers want electric mobility that works seamlessly in their daily lives,” he said.

He added, “The A2 E-tron is our answer to that demand: efficient, compact and confident. We’re making the entry into Audi’s electric world easier and more appealing than ever.”

The new A2 will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, meaning it shares its underpinnings and proportions with the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback.

“It’s a highly efficient entry model into the Audi family, positioned at the heart of the A-segment, which includes the A3 and Q3,” Döllner explained. “Though compact on the outside, it offers remarkable interior space.”

He further noted, “We will announce pricing closer to launch, but as our most affordable electric model so far, it will sit below our current EV offerings in the Audi portfolio.”

Within Audi, the A2 is viewed as a modern reinterpretation of the 1999 supermini, which was celebrated for its lightweight aluminium structure and aerodynamic one-box design that prioritised efficiency.

Sources indicate that the similar silhouette of the new A2 has been driven by the same focus on aerodynamic performance that inspired the original’s design.

Audi describes the revival of the A2 name as a “deliberate homage” to the innovative spirit of the first model and has pledged to continue the original car’s mission of combining efficiency with practicality.

While Audi has not yet confirmed a specific unveiling date beyond “autumn,” the company is registered as an exhibitor at the Paris Motor Show in October. This makes it highly likely that the new A2 will be revealed or at least make its public debut at the event, one of the most prominent automotive showcases of the year.
