New Delhi: NXP Semiconductors has introduced the SAF9800, a new automotive processor that combines AM and FM radio reception with artificial intelligence-based audio processing on one chip. The company says the design could help carmakers reduce the number of separate parts used in infotainment systems.
The processor became available in May 2026 and is aimed at new vehicle platforms, including electric cars. It can handle broadcast radio, cabin audio and sound detection through one system. For carmakers, this may simplify development across models sold in different countries.
What the NXP SAF9800 doesThe SAF9800 combines radio reception and audio processing functions that previously required several components. Carmakers can use the same hardware across different vehicles and activate selected features through software.
Its main functions include:
- AM and FM radio reception
- Voice and sound recognition
- Real-time noise reduction
- In-cabin audio sensing
- Software-based feature upgrades
The chip uses machine learning to separate useful sounds from cabin noise. For example, it can identify a voice command, an emergency siren or a possible mechanical sound even when music, road noise and passenger conversations are present.
Why AM radio remains part of the chipElectric vehicles can create interference that affects AM radio signals. NXP has included its EVAM-lite noise reduction technology to address this issue.
Radio access is also becoming a policy matter in some markets. In the United States, proposed rules seek to retain AM broadcast radio in new vehicles. A flexible chip gives carmakers the option to support different radio requirements without changing the full infotainment hardware.
John van den Braak, Senior Vice President and General Manager of NXP’s Infotainment and Audio Systems product line, said, “The industry is moving away from fragmented, hardware-driven infotainment systems toward more integrated, software-defined architectures.”
More processing inside one componentThe SAF9800 includes a HiFi 5 audio processor and neural network processing support. NXP claims it provides over 10 times the audio processing performance of its earlier generation.
The commercial appeal lies in fewer components, a smaller system footprint and easier software updates. Adoption will depend on carmaker testing, cost and how well the processor performs inside real cabins filled with traffic noise, music and human chatter.
