Kabul 21 July. A sudden flood following heavy rains on Monday caused huge devastation in the Nuristan province of eastern Afghanistan. At least 20 people died in this natural disaster, about 80 people were injured, while more than 100 people are still reported missing. The administration has intensified relief and rescue operations.

Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) spokesperson Yusuf Hammad said on the social media platform ‘X’ that the floods have caused massive loss of life and property in Nuristan. Teams of the Provincial Disaster Management Department have reached the affected areas and are busy in retrieving the bodies of the dead, taking the injured to safe places and searching for the missing people. He said official figures of casualties and property damage would be released only after the initial survey and damage assessment is completed. Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid expressed deep sorrow over the accident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. He has instructed the officials to speed up the relief and rescue operations.

Parun city most affected

According to local officials, Parun, the capital of Nuristan, has been worst affected by the floods. Many houses, roads and other infrastructure have been seriously damaged here. Due to continuous rain, rescue operations are also facing difficulties. Earlier on June 9, Afghan officials had informed that in the last 10 weeks, 301 people have died across the country due to flash floods and other natural disasters, while 385 people have been injured.

According to National Disaster Management Authority:

1- About 2,000 houses have been completely destroyed.
2- 7,187 houses have been partially damaged.
3- 580 kilometers of roads have been washed away.
4- More than 30,300 acres of agricultural land and crops have been destroyed.
5- 18,812 families have been affected by these natural disasters.
