England international Morgan Rogers has officially become the most expensive British footballer in history following his £117 million transfer to Chelsea.

The 23-year-old forward has joined Xabi Alonso’s side for a record-breaking fee, surpassing the £116 million that Manchester City paid earlier this summer to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea began hinting at the announcement of their new signing at 9:30 pm on Tuesday night with a teaser video featuring an old-school radio broadcasting the message: “Welcome back to Cobham FM, London is finally starting to cool down.”

The clip referenced Rogers’ signature ‘ice cold’ celebration, a gesture he shares with his fellow England international and new teammate Cole Palmer.

Rogers arrives at Stamford Bridge after a standout season with Aston Villa, where he registered 10 goals and six assists in the Premier League, along with three goals and five assists in their Europa League-winning campaign.

Now, the Birmingham-born attacker takes on the next chapter of his career in London, where he will play under new Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso. Rogers becomes Alonso’s second major signing following the arrival of Italian wing-back Marco Pelastra from Atalanta.

Speaking for the first time after his move, Rogers expressed his excitement: “I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a team I’ve admired since I was young. I’m really looking forward to working with the new manager, playing alongside the talented squad we have, and being part of the journey the club is on. That’s why I’m here, and I can’t wait to get started.”

In Chelsea’s official announcement video, Rogers added: “I’m joining the biggest club in London. The direction the club wants to move in is something I want to be a part of — it’s a perfect fit for me. I’m a free-spirited, expressive footballer who loves to take risks, make things happen, and change games. I can’t wait to get going.”

The attacking midfielder will link up with the Chelsea squad after their pre-season tour of Australia, following his involvement with England at the World Cup.

During the tournament in North America, Rogers largely featured as a substitute but started in England’s semi-final loss to Argentina, playing on the right wing. Across seven appearances, he provided one assist but did not find the back of the net.

He came close to scoring in the quarter-final against Norway when goalkeeper Orjen Nyland spilled his long-range effort, allowing Jude Bellingham to score the rebound and give England the lead in extra time in Miami, Florida.
