Five-time IPL winners Chennai Super Kings parted ways with their longtime coach Stephen Fleming on 13th July. The move came after Texas Super Kings were knocked out of the MLC 2026 and finished at the bottom of the table. The move was speculated for a while after Chennai Super Kings didn’t make it to the IPL playoffs since their title win in 2023.

Former CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath has backed the call by his former team. The 45-year-old took to his YouTube channel and said, “With Indian youngsters coming through the ranks, Chennai need a coach with great technical and tactical knowledge in the T20 format. The team has to build a squad by picking the right players and also grooming them.”

There were reports that former skipper MS Dhoni could be given the mentor role. None of those reports, though, have been confirmed by the Men in Yellow. It is to be noted that Fleming had left it to the management to take a call on his future after a dismal IPL 2026 season.

Kiwi legend in the running for England coaching

Brendon McCullum’s stepping down as England’s Test coach had seen the 53-year-old being linked with the job. It is unclear if the former Kiwi legend will take over the job. During his time in the IPL, the renowned coach helped his team win five titles and two Champions League trophies.

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwinmeanwhile, while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, said, “Fleming and Dhoni understood each other really well, and that partnership carried on for such a long time. I would say it was about time Chennai Super Kings looked beyond.”

The 39-year-old was also asked about Dhoni possibly stepping into the dugout, to which he said, “If Dhoni is willing to do that, there is no better person. If not, they need to find someone who can operate independently and take accountability for their own actions.

“I think there is a small aspect of uncertainty for anyone who will walk into that dressing room. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a huge name, and he’s still very much a part of the discussion when you’re talking about a squad that will be picked.”
