New Delhi. Amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Palestinian organization Hamas has made a major change in its political leadership. The organization has elected Khalil Al-Hayya as the new political bureau chief. This post was vacant for about two years after the death of Yahya Sinwar. The announcement of the new leadership has come at a time when continuous efforts are going on at the international level regarding military tension and ceasefire in Gaza.

Who is Khalil Al-Hayya?
Khalil al-Hayya was born in 1960 in the Gaza Strip. He is counted among the senior leaders of Hamas and has been associated with the organization since its inception. Over the years he has played an active role in Hamas’s political and diplomatic affairs.
Al-Hayya has also been one of the organization’s key negotiators in various rounds of indirect ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. For this reason, he is also seen as the political face of Hamas.
Leadership saved amidst many attacks
According to reports, al-Hayya had a narrow escape during an Israeli operation in Doha last year. However, a member of his family was killed in that attack. He has long been part of the organization’s top leadership and is counted among the influential leaders within Hamas.
Got big responsibility in elections
In leadership elections held within Hamas, al-Hayya defeated senior leader Khaled Mashal and won the post of political bureau chief. The organization says that in view of security reasons and the current situation, the entire election process was conducted in a confidential manner.
With the selection of Al-Hayya, the interim leadership council that was handling the functioning of the organization after the death of Yahya Sinwar is also set to be dissolved.
What will happen next?
According to Hamas, the organization’s political bureau will hold a meeting in Istanbul in the coming days. New committees, organizational structure and future strategy will be finalized in this meeting. Al-Hayya is expected to formally take charge soon.
According to reports, Hamas’ military wing ‘Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades’ has also expressed support for the new political leadership.
Got responsibility amidst struggle
Hamas has suffered heavy losses in the war that started after the attack on Israel in October 2023. Many top leaders of the organization have died and there is international pressure on it to give up its arms.
Meanwhile, efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza have been taking place from time to time, although military operations in the area have not completely stopped. In such a situation, it will be important to see what impact the leadership of Khalil al-Hayya, known as an experienced negotiator, has on future negotiations and the situation in Gaza.
At present, there has been no official reaction from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the appointment of Khalil al-Hayya.
