Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has criticised Leandro Paredes and Spain’s players for their roles in the heated aftermath of the World Cup final in New Jersey. The 44-year-old football legend, now a television pundit, condemned the Argentina midfielder’s aggressive actions during a post-match scuffle and questioned the Spanish team’s failure to respond.

Tempers flare after final whistle

Spain clinched the World Cup title with a 106th-minute extra-time goal from Ferran Torres, after controlling the match and preventing Argentina from registering any shots on target during regulation time. Argentina’s frustration was evident when Enzo Fernandez received a late red card before the end of normal time, while Paredes managed to avoid dismissal despite an earlier booking.

A chaotic confrontation broke out after the final whistle when Nahuel Molina struck Rodri, followed by Paredes kicking Eric Garcia and dragging Gavi to the ground. Argentina’s assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also seen appearing to punch Dani Olmo during the melee.

Ibrahimovic condemns on-field chaos

Speaking on Fox Sports, Ibrahimovic strongly criticised the post-match disorder. He called Paredes’ behaviour unacceptable and questioned why Spain’s players did not defend their teammates. The former AC Milan forward said: “Paredes can be happy there was no player like me on the pitch. If I had been there, I would have headbutted him and been sent off. It is unprofessional behaviour from him.”

He continued: “I don’t understand what the Spanish players were doing. They just stood there watching while one of their teammates was attacked.”

Swedish great announces punditry retirement

In addition to sharing his candid views on the incident in New Jersey, Ibrahimovic surprised fans by announcing his departure from punditry. After working throughout the tournament on Fox Sports alongside Thierry Henry and Alexi Lalas, the former Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain striker said: “I have talked a lot during the past month and a half, but these will be my last words.”

He added: “Alexi [Lalas], Thierry, Rebecca [Lowe], thank you. It has been my pleasure to share this studio with you. I also want to thank Fox, the United States, and everyone who watched. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. This is my last visit to the studio. For me, this was the first and last time.”

FIFA investigation underway

FIFA has launched formal disciplinary proceedings following the mass confrontation involving Argentina’s players and coaching team after the final whistle. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) could face significant fines and suspensions if found guilty of misconduct.
