Hoarseness is a common issue. Often, it is caused by a cold, a throat infection, or excessive talking, and it resolves on its own within a few days. However, if your voice remains hoarse for two to three weeks without improvement, it should not be taken lightly. In such cases, consulting a doctor is essential, as it could be an early sign of throat cancer. Early detection makes treatment much easier.
**Consult a doctor immediately if hoarseness persists**
Dr. Aparna Mahajan, an ENT specialist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, explains that if a person's voice remains hoarse for two to three weeks, they must see a doctor. This is particularly important if the patient is over 55 years old, or if the hoarseness is accompanied by a lump in the throat, difficulty swallowing, or a persistent change in the voice; in such instances, one should not delay the examination. Smokers and those who consume alcohol should also see a doctor immediately if they notice such symptoms.
**Throat examination reveals the underlying cause**
Dr. Mahajan explains that when hoarseness does not resolve over a long period, the first step is to examine the inside of the throat. This involves inserting a small, thin camera into the throat to visualize the vocal cords. The examination helps identify issues such as inflammation, polyps, lesions, or tumors. If an abnormality is detected, further testing and treatment are initiated accordingly.
**Throat cancer can occur even without substance use**
Dr. Mahajan notes that throat cancer does not affect only tobacco users or smokers; while the risk is higher in these groups, the disease can also occur in people with no history of substance use. Individuals over the age of 55, those with a family history of cancer, and those working in industries involving chemicals or mining need to be particularly cautious. Such individuals should undergo an immediate medical check-up if they notice any symptoms.
Dr. Aparna notes that if hoarseness is accompanied by a lump in the throat, difficulty swallowing, a sensation of food getting stuck in the throat, unexplained weight loss, or a loss of appetite, these signs should not be ignored. Often, a change in voice is the very first symptom of throat cancer; therefore, it is crucial to consult a doctor if there is a persistent change in one's voice.
Simple and essential measures to prevent throat cancer
Dr. Aparna advises that avoiding smoking and tobacco is the most important step in preventing throat cancer. Consuming alcohol alongside smoking increases the risk of cancer manifold. Additionally, issues with acidity should not be overlooked, as the repeated reflux of acid into the throat can damage its inner lining. If hoarseness persists for a long time or any of the aforementioned symptoms appear, the best course of action is to consult a doctor without delay.
