Monsoon Rains in Delhi-NCR: For the past few days, Delhi-NCR has experienced neither intense heat nor rainfall. In July, a month when the monsoon is typically at its peak, these regions of India are longing for raindrops. Yet, the weather is such that temperatures have dropped low enough to make one feel a distinct chill at times.

What exactly has happened to the weather?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been issuing continuous 'Yellow' and 'Orange' alerts for rain. While forecasts often predict overcast skies and the possibility of light showers, most areas in Delhi-NCR have not seen even a brief spell of rain. The weather has become so stubborn that the monsoon simply isn't taking hold here.

The IMD has predicted cloudy skies for July 24 as well. Friday will see partial to heavy cloud cover throughout the day, with a chance of very light rain or drizzle in some areas; a brief shower is possible, particularly in the late evening or at night. However, many such IMD predictions have not materialized in the past.

Regarding today's temperatures, the maximum is expected to hover between 32°C and 34°C—slightly below or at normal levels—which explains the lack of intense heat. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature is expected to remain between 24°C and 26°C, maintaining a cool feel. However, high humidity levels (70–80% or higher) in the morning could push the 'feels-like' temperature to 35–38°C, resulting in hot and humid conditions. Some relief might be felt in the afternoon due to cloud cover.

As for the monsoon's failure to arrive properly, the IMD had previously predicted the impact of a 'Super El Niño' in India. This phenomenon is causing rainfall to consistently decline, keeping precipitation levels below normal. The month of June has already passed with little to no rainfall; while there were some hopes for July, current conditions suggest that El Niño is likely to keep this month dry as well. Concerns are now mounting regarding August and September, given the Meteorological Department's earlier forecast of below-normal rainfall for the June-to-September period.

In this context, although the IMD has predicted rain for today, whether it actually occurs will depend on the prevailing weather conditions. However, some relief from the heat is expected today. The weather will be relatively mild—neither harsh sunlight nor heavy rain is likely; instead, there will be a mix of cloud cover, light showers, and moderate heat. According to the IMD's forecast, similar conditions are expected to persist over the coming days, with no significant fluctuations in temperature.
