New Delhi:Mercedes-Benz India has said that every car they have sold since January 2026 in the country is compliant with E25 ethanol-blended petrol. That makes it one of the first luxury carmakers in India to prepare its lineup before any mandate for higher blends of ethanol.
The announcement comes months following India’s completion of the E20 petrol rollout. In recent weeks, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) notified technical standards for higher ethanol blends, including E22, E25, E27 and E30, signalling government’s efforts to prepare the regulatory framework for fuels above 20 per cent ethanol blend.
Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer, during the launch of Mercedes-AMG E 53, said the brand has updated its portfolio with future fuel regulations in mind. He explained that customers would expect Mercedes-Benz to know the regulatory changes. With the discussions for E25 on, even if it doesn’t become a reality, Iyer said that the brand wants to offer something which is compliant.
Mercedes-Benz had previously made its India range compatible with E20 fuel in 2020, many years before the blend became mandatory.
Mercedes previously concerned with E20 fuel qualityThe brand’s newest move comes shortly after it raised concerns about fuel quality and adulteration rather than ethanol blending itself. Mercedes-Benz has said that inconsistent fuel quality could affect the performance of the vehicle and called for stringent quality control as higher ethanol blends are introduced.
The brand has said that it will continue to offer internal-combustion, battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in India. Iyer said that the idea is to offer good options “across the spectrum”.
The AMG E 53 comes as Mercedes-Benz India’s second plug-in hybrid model following the S-Class Plug-in Hybrid. It also marks the first electrified AMG E-Class to be introduced in the country. The brand has said Indian buyers continue to show interest in both traditional ICE vehicles and electrified models. All of this makes its strategy of maintaining a diverse powertrain portfolio the right direction to take.
