Mumbai Pune Railway : The ‘Bor Ghat’ connecting the two major cities of Mumbai and Pune is very important for rail transport. However, every year during the monsoons, landslides in these hilly areas disrupt train services and leave thousands of passengers stranded. To find a permanent solution to this geographical challenge, the Central Railway has decided to construct a special emergency road in the ghat area.
Key features of the project
This ambitious project of Central Railway will be built in the very challenging ghat section from Karjat to Lonavla, and the total length of this road will be 26 km parallel to the railway tracks. The main objective of this project is to create direct connectivity to the incident site in case of emergency. In the event of a track failure, crack or overhead wire breakage, railway technical teams and heavy repair machinery can reach the spot immediately via road, speeding up repair work. Why was this decision taken?
In the beginning of July this year, there was a huge landslide in Bor Ghat due to heavy rains. Due to this, the train traffic between Mumbai and Pune was stopped for several hours. The railway staff worked under extremely adverse conditions to restore the track. Taking a lesson from this experience, the railway administration took the important decision to construct this parallel road as it is very important to have a road communication system for the future repair of railway tracks and safe rescue of passengers. Direct benefits to passengers
This emergency road will bring great relief to lakhs of passengers traveling in Bor Ghat. In future, if trains get stuck in the ghat due to heavy rains or landslides, the railway administration will be able to deliver food, water and medical aid to the passengers in a timely manner through this road. Also, railways will be able to evacuate the stranded passengers safely to their desired destinations through alternative vehicles. The most important advantage is that since technical breakdown or derailment work can be started immediately, hours of delay of trains will be avoided and rail traffic will be restored in minimum time. Other projects in Ghat Division
Along with this emergency road, the work of the third railway line between Karjat-Lonavala is also going on at a fast pace. As per the railway administration’s estimate, the third line in this ghat section will be completed by 30 July 2026 It is likely to enter passenger service at full capacity. Both these projects will make Mumbai-Pune rail travel safer and faster in future. Mumbai Pune Railway
