Actor Roma Navani is back on stage with the comedy play
Patte Khul Gaye , marking her return after her television stint in
Pyar Ka Pehla Naam Radha Mohan. While she has worked across television and theatre for years, Roma says the stage continues to be the medium that has shaped her the most as an actor.
"Theatre has really helped me as an artist. It has improved my dialogue delivery and pronunciation. I even learnt Urdu because of theatre, and that has opened many doors for me. Everything I've learnt on stage adds to the work I do today. The kind of audience reaction you receive in theatre is incredibly satisfying. I've been doing theatre for 27 years, and it has been a truly rewarding experience. I've worked across different mediums, but nothing compares to theatre because it helps you grow as an actor."
Her latest project came unexpectedly. "I've known Rakesh Bedi for many years through our theatre background, although we hadn't really been in touch for quite some time. One morning, I was surprised to see a missed call from him. When I called him back, he asked if I'd be interested in doing a play with him."
Rather than accepting immediately, Roma wanted to understand the role first. "I was very excited by the offer, but at the same time I wanted to understand the script and my character. So instead of immediately saying yes, I asked for a narration."
Rakesh readily agreed, and after hearing the script, Roma was convinced. "I said yes because I got the narration and could figure out it was a good character. It was one of the lead roles, had a lot of humour, everything was falling into place. It was a reputed banner, and Rakesh Bedi was part of it. I also had the dates because I wasn't committed to a daily soap at that time."
In
Patte Khul Gaye, Roma stars opposite Anand Mahadavan in a comedy centred around a dinner gathering where hidden secrets gradually come to light. The production has already been staged across Mumbai and other cities and is set to travel internationally.
