Why the retrenchment due to moving the headquarters?
There are believed to be several reasons behind this decision of Samsung. The company’s consumer electronics business includes segments such as mobile phones, TVs and home appliances. In these areas, the company is facing heavy competition from Apple and various Chinese tech companies. Increasing competition is putting increasing pressure on companies to cut costs and make operations more efficient.
On the other hand, Samsung’s semiconductor business is growing rapidly due to the growing demand for artificial intelligence i.e. AI. Demand for chips and other technologies needed for AI is increasing. In such a situation, the company is restructuring costs and resources in its different businesses. The company says the headquarters shift is also part of this strategic shift.

Employees in New Jersey and Texas are most affected
According to a Reuters report, Samsung’s decision has had the biggest impact on employees working in the mobile, display and consumer electronics divisions. Approximately 739 positions in the New Jersey office are directly affected by the move. In addition, the Plano, Texas office has also lost about 100 employees.
According to the company, employees with essential roles in the new setup have been offered the opportunity to relocate to Texas. However, it is not possible for every employee to migrate. Employees who are not ready to move to a new city or whose positions are eliminated in the new structure, are forced to leave the company. This has created a dilemma for many employees to choose between employment and migration.

Layoffs continue in the tech industry
Samsung’s decision comes at a time when the global tech industry has been witnessing massive layoffs for some time now. Many big tech companies including Microsoft, Meta have also reduced the number of employees to reduce costs and make the business more efficient.
