Ahead of the release of Batwara 1947 on August 15, audiences will get a chance to relive one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated actor-director partnerships. A special film festival will celebrate Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi by re-releasing their most iconic hits in theaters. The retrospective will begin with Ghayal (1990), Santoshi’s directorial debut. The action drama featured Sunny Deol as an amateur boxer on a relentless quest for justice and became a landmark film for both the actor and the filmmaker. The festival will also screen the acclaimed 1993 courtroom drama Damini, starring Meenakshi Sheshadri. The film tackled themes of justice and social prejudice, while Sunny Deol’s powerful performance as lawyer Govind earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. Rounding off the line-up is Ghatak (1996), in which Sunny played a villager who stands up against a ruthless crime lord after moving to the city. Meenakshi Sheshadri starred opposite Deol in all three films, making them one of the memorable on-screen pairings of the decade. Nearly 30 years after their last collaboration, Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi have reunited for Batwara 1947, which is being produced by Aamir Khan. The film is among the most anticipated Hindi releases of the year. The reunion is particularly noteworthy given the differences the duo had in the past. Their association reportedly soured over a proposed film on Bhagat Singh, with Sunny keen on having his brother Bobby Deol headline the project. Santoshi eventually made The Legend of Bhagat Singh with Ajay Devgn in the lead. The film went on to receive widespread acclaim, with Rajkumar Santoshi winning the National Film Award for Best Direction and Ajay Devgn receiving the National Film Award for Best Actor. Years earlier, Sunny Deol had also been honoured with the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his memorable performance in Damini.
