Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday resigned from his post following weeks of nationwide protests over alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive exams.
Hours later, President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation and assigned Cabinet Minister Prahlad Joshi the charge of the ministry of education, in addition to his existing portfolio.
Joshi is currently the minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution, and new and renewable energy,
The Cockroach Janta Party political campaign, which had been leading the demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, described the development as a victory for democracy.
Hours later, Cockroach Janta Party Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das said that the campaign was withdrawing its agitation “in good faith, with the understanding that the agreed-upon terms will be executed within the agreed-upon timelines”.
Pradhan said he submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi so that “anti-national forces” do not take advantage of the ongoing protests that have spread across the country, and so that no student “gets embroiled in legal battles”.
