The United Nations has expressed its awareness regarding the student protests occurring in New Delhi, emphasizing the necessity for individuals wishing to demonstrate peacefully to do so without the threat of harassment, arrest, or harm.
Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, addressed inquiries on Friday concerning the UN's perspective on the youth-led demonstrations in India.
"We are certainly aware of the protests taking place in New Delhi," Dujarric stated. "It is crucial that those who wish to protest peacefully are permitted to do so without fear of harassment, arrest, or injury."
He further noted that it is the responsibility of security forces, as it is in all situations, to safeguard these rights.
In a related development, India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday following weeks of protests triggered by exam paper leaks.
The demonstrations were led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical group that rapidly evolved into a national movement.
Initiated on June 20 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, the CJP focused on the NEET exam paper leak from May, which forced approximately 2 million students to retake the exam. There were also tragic reports of student suicides across various states.
Protesters called for educational reforms and demanded Pradhan's resignation.
On July 20, thousands marched towards the parliament, defying police restrictions and barricades, resulting in a crackdown that left many injured.
Additionally, the protesters are seeking compensation for the families of NEET candidates who took their own lives and the withdrawal of police cases against demonstrators related to the July 20 march.
