Assam There were some signs of relief in the flood situation in Assam on Sunday. In most of the flood affected areas, the water level has started decreasing due to lack of rain overnight. However, more than 6.54 lakh people are still affected by floods in six districts of the state. At the same time, the number of people who lost their lives due to floods this year has increased to 66.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the water level is gradually receding in districts like Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat in upper Assam. Officials say that if the weather remains favourable, the situation may improve during the day, which will speed up relief and rescue operations.

According to the authority’s midnight report, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts are still affected by floods. Among these, Sivasagar is the most affected district, where about 2.90 lakh people have been affected. Apart from this, about 1.90 lakh people in Charaideo and 1.30 lakh people in Jorhat are affected by floods.

Four more deaths due to floods were recorded during the last 24 hours. Of these, three people lost their lives in Sivasagar and one in Charaideo. With this, the death toll due to floods this year has increased to 66.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the Assam government of all possible assistance from the Center to deal with the floods. Meanwhile, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the flood affected areas and took stock of the arrangements in relief camps and directed the officials to provide uninterrupted food, drinking water, health services and other essential facilities.

Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said that the situation in the state has become better than before and the administration has been successful in reaching most of the affected areas. He said that the Central Government team has also reached the state to assess the damage caused by floods in Upper Assam.

According to ASDMA, currently 274 relief camps and relief distribution centers are being operated, where 18,902 displaced people have been given shelter. Army, NDRF, SDRF, police and other agencies are continuously engaged in relief and rescue operations.

During the last 24 hours, 1,668.68 quintals of rice, 286.99 quintals of pulses, 83.75 quintals of salt and 7,995.01 liters of mustard oil were distributed among the affected people. According to the authority, 810 villages in the state are still submerged, while 34,970.8 hectares of agricultural land has been affected by floods. Apart from this, embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also been damaged in many districts. At present, Dikhau river in Sivasagar and Dhansiri river in Numaligarh are flowing above the danger mark.
