New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi heaped praise on Indian weightlifters Mirabai Chanu and Rishikanta Singh after their medal triumphs at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Mirabai won a gold medal in the women’s 48kg category, while Rishikanta bagged a silver medal in the men’s 60kg category.

One of the favourites for the elusive gold medal, Mirabai produced a sensational display to live up to the expectations. She lifted a combined total of 190kg to shatter records on her way to grabbing the top spot on the podium. The 31-year-old lifted 85kg in the snatch round to set a Commonwealth Games record before creating another record with a 105kg lift in the clean & jerk category.

Mirabai won her third straight gold medal to script history by becoming the first weightlifter to win three consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. Rishikanta, on the other hand, lifted a total of 264kg in the final of the men’s 60kg weightlifting to clinch silver.

Hailing Mirabai for adding another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting, PM Modi praised her for winning back-to-back gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. “Another glorious chapter in Indian Weightlifting,” PM Modi wrote in a post on X.

“The talented Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills at the Commonwealth Games with a stunning performance in the 48 kg category and winning Gold. With back-to-back Commonwealth Games Golds and an overall fourth CWG medal to her name, she remains an inspiration for every Indian. Congratulations to her! Best wishes for the endeavours ahead,” he added.

PM Modi also lauded Rishikanta, stating that he was proud of the weightlifter’s performance in the men’s 60kg final. The Prime Minister wished the Manipur weightlifter the best for his future.

His determination and outstanding performance have brought immense joy to the nation. May he continue to scale greater heights and inspire many young athletes. India extended its medals tally to four at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 after securing three medals, including a gold on Sunday, July 26. India won three medals in weightlifting on Sunday to cap off a stellar day. After Rishikanata and Mirabai, weightlifter Raja Muthupandi won a silver medal in the men’s 65kg category to clinch India’s fourth medal in the ongoing showpiece event.
