Chelsea have signed several players from Brighton over the years, but it is fair to say that nobody would have predicted the latest transfer link between the two clubs.

According to The Athletic, the Blues are “exploring a move” to bring Danny Welbeck in from the Seagulls.

Brighton are “aware” of Chelsea’s interest in the England international, who has 12 months left on his current contract.

Even though the situation is still at an “early stage”, there is “optimism on all sides” that an agreement can be reached in the summer transfer window.

It is claimed that new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso values his quality and leadership. The club have made it clear that they want to add more experienced players after several years of signing young talents.

Welbeck had his most productive season in front of goal last term, scoring 13 times in 37 Premier League appearances.

But what does this mean for the strikers Chelsea already have? The report adds that they will “listen to offers” for Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emgeha, while Marc Guiu could leave either on loan or on a permanent basis.

Nicolas Jackson has been linked with a move to Aston Villa after returning from his season-long loan at Bayern Munich. The Senegalese forward was not part of the pre-season tour squad that travelled to Australia last week.
