Actor Archana Puran Singh recently opened up about one of the most difficult memories from her childhood, recalling a harsh punishment she received while studying in Class 1.
During a recent interview with Fever FM, the actor revisited her school days and shared that the incident has remained fresh in her mind despite the passing of several decades. While speaking about her early education, Archana was asked whether she had ever been summoned to the principal's office. The question prompted her to remember an experience from when she was only six years old. Although she no longer remembers what mistake she made, she clearly recalls the punishment she received from the head nun at her school.
Singh said, “I was caned when I was in first standard. I was taken to the head nun. It was a long cane and she called me ‘wicked child’ and she caned me 10 times on my hand. I was 6 years old. I don’t remember what I did but I only remember getting caned.”
Strict discipline at Archana Puran Singh’s Convent school
Archana also spoke about the discipline followed at her convent school and explained that punishments were handled differently there. Instead of the common classroom punishments seen elsewhere, students were often asked to kneel outside the classroom if they misbehaved.
Singh recalled that those moments felt deeply embarrassing because students were expected to maintain exemplary behaviour at all times. Even though she has fond memories of her school, she admitted that some of its disciplinary methods were difficult for young children.
Singh said, “The nuns at our school wouldn’t say ‘bakra’ or ‘murga’ but we were told, ‘Kneel down, my wicked child’. So we would kneel down outside the class. It was very humiliating in a convent school because we were all supposed to be very good children. I loved my school but they had different rules.”
Archana Puran Singh was a top student who was also mischievous
Looking back on her school life, Archana revealed that she consistently performed well in academics. She described herself as a front-bench student who regularly topped her class. At the same time, she admitted that she was also known for her playful and mischievous nature. According to the actor, her teachers often found it surprising that a bright student could also be so naughty. They believed she possessed exceptional ability and expected her to pursue a prestigious profession in the future. Archana said, “I was a topper, a front bencher but I was also very naughty so my teachers would always say, ‘What a waste of your talent and ability.’ And when I became an actor, they said, ‘We thought you would become an IAS, IFS, but you became an actor. Your whole life has been destroyed now.’.”
Archana Puran Singh’s journey from Dehradun to the entertainment industry
The actor spent her childhood in Dehradun before moving to Delhi for higher education. She later studied at Lady Shri Ram College and eventually shifted to Mumbai while still in her late teens to pursue a career in films and television. Over the years, Archana established herself as one of the most recognised faces in the entertainment industry. Her journey proved very different from what many of her teachers had imagined during her school days.
