Putting an end to anticipation, Toyota has launched the new Hilux in India. It has a starting price of Rs 31.99 lakh, ex-showroom. The range-topping variant has an ex-showroom price of Rs 36.69 lakh. EMIs start as low as Rs 39,999 per month. The Hilux has now entered its 9th generation and comes with a fresh design, improved interior and more features. Test drives will begin onJuly 29th.

The new Hilux gets a significant visual makeover. It now comes with a fresh front fascia. The design is sharper and more aggressive. Toyota calls it the Cyber Sumo face, and says it resembles the pre-combat ‘Sikhiri’ stance of Sumo wrestlers.

The carmaker has been putting out multiple teaser videos in the past few weeks, all previewing portions of this design. The LED headlamps are now sleeker and come with integrated LED DRLs.

The grille section is also new and has ‘TOYOTA’ spelt out on it, instead of the traditional logo. The front bumper also has a fresh design and houses circular fog lamp units. The colour palette has six attractive shades.

In the side view, the new Hilux would stand close to the previous generation model. It continues to be offered as a double-cab pickup. The alloy wheels are new. The loading deck has minor design changes gone into it. Side steps have been integrated into the deck area. The rear gets minor changes, particularly in the tail lamps and bumper designs.

Toyota has based the 9th generation of the Hilux on its ‘QDR’ philosophy (Quality, Durability and Reliability). This has remained the core strength of the truck for decades. The design follows ‘Robust Simplicity’ approach and has a sharp focus on ensuring usability, comfort and practicality.

The interior has been redesigned. It now looks more modern and technology-rich. There is a sharper focus on ergonomics and the cabin uses more upmarket materials. It feels much more premium than the previous model.

The infotainment system now, is a large, 12.3-inch freestanding unit that comes with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Paired with it is a 9-speaker JBL premium audio system. The instrument cluster is now a 10.25-inch screen.

The new Hilux matches the segment expectations with its feature list. Overall, occupant comfort seems to have improved, especially on longer rides.

The ninth-generation Hilux is based on a heavily upgraded version of the globally proven IMV platform. The previous generation also used the same base. Toyota seems to have worked on the suspension to deliver a better ride-handling balance.

The new model is powered by a 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine making 204PS and 500Nm. Paired to it is a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Like the previous generations, the new Hilux is also a capable off-roader. It comes with rugged 4×4 hardware and electronics like selectable drive and terrain modes. For the first time, the new Hilux is also offered with a 4×2 configuration. The customers now have more to choose from. The carmaker is also providing a wide range of accessories and add-ons for the Hilux.

In the Indian market, the Isuzu DMax VCross remains the sole rival of the Hilux. This may change soon, as Mahindra is also preparing a lifestyle pickup based on an upgraded Scorpio-N platform. It will be the production form of the Global Pik-Up showcased previously in South Africa. That vehicle will also be a Hilux rival.

The Hilux has a niche fan following in India, just like it does in global markets. The new model builds on this acceptance and delivers a notably better cabin experience, comfort and utility. It caters to lifestyle vehicle seekers and adventure enthusiasts looking for a dependable, rugged truck.
