New Delhi: Indian men’s cricket team assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has resigned from his post. The return of this former veteran all-rounder from Netherlands to the coaching staff of the Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is now considered almost certain. According to the report of ESPN Cricinfo, Ten Doeschate decided to part ways with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the Indian team’s disappointing limited overs tour of England.
Role and end of tenure
Ryan ten Doeschate was included in the backroom staff of Team India along with Gautam Gambhir, who became the head coach after the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure and the victory of T20 World Cup 2024. According to the initial plans, he was to be mainly given the responsibility of fielding coach, but due to the already presence of T Dilip, he was kept as a general assistant coach. Due to not having any specific and permanent role in the team, he had been thinking of separating himself for some time. He finalized this decision after India’s defeat in the T20 and ODI series on the England tour.
Old memories with KKR
With his return to KKR, Ten Doeschate will once again pair with Abhishek Nair. Even before this, both have worked together in the support staff of the Indian team and KKR. Ten Doeschate’s association with KKR goes back more than a decade. As a player, he was part of the title-winning KKR team in 2012 and 2014. After this, from 2022 to 2024, he played the role of fielding coach of the team. He left the franchise only after BCCI got the coaching post of the Indian team in 2024.
Sweet and sour experiences with the Indian team
During Ten Doeschate’s two-year tenure, the Indian team achieved major successes in the limited overs format. The team won the Asia Cup title in 2025 and successfully defended its title in the 2026 T20 World Cup. During this period, the performance of the Indian team in Test cricket was very disappointing. India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the Australia tour and then suffered crushing defeats in the Test series on their own home grounds by 3-0 to New Zealand and 2-0 to South Africa. Amidst these ups and downs, Ten Doeschate is once again turning towards his old home KKR.
