Much of the country is under upgraded amber health alerts as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warned rising temperatures may pose risks.
Meanwhile, the Met Office’s deputy chief forecaster, Gregory Wolverson, has warned: “By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30Cs, and while the heat will not be widespread across the whole of the UK, it will be enough for parts of the southeast to likely meet official heatwave criteria by Thursday.”
With a heatwave now on its way, the Met Office’s website issues guidance for households to help them stay cool and safe in warmer conditions.
One piece of advice they offer is to close curtains in rooms that face the sun to “keep indoor spaces cooler.”
The agency also adds that “closing doors and windows in the heat of the day can keep it cooler inside.”
The Met Office also advises households to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.
They add that people should try and avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen, and avoid physical exercise during the peak of the heat.
You should also take water with you wherever you go to ensure you stay hydrated.
Finally, the Met Office adds: “If you are going into open water to cool down, take care and follow local safety advice.”
