NWSL Power Rankings: Washington Spirit find a way, Sam Kerr scores first Gotham FC goal and Utah Royals FC catch fire

Sam Kerr scored her first Gotham FC goal as the Bats drew 2-2 with Portland Thorns FC, while Sofia Cantore pushed Washington Spirit past Lindsey Heaps and Denver Summit FC 1-0. GOAL ranks all 16 NWSL teams in this week’s Power Rankings.

Another NWSL weekend produced plenty of changes at both ends of the table.

Seattle Reign made the strongest statement, travelling away from home to secure a 2-0 victory over San Diego. Maddie Mercado got the opener before Jordyn Bugg wrapped up all three points, leaving the Wave with an expensive home loss. San Diego slipped to fourth in the standings, while Seattle moved up to 10th.

Friday night’s headline clash also carried major importance, as Orlando kept grinding out results with a 1-0 win over Chicago despite being without star forward and Golden Boot leader Barbra Banda, who is away at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Elsewhere, Gotham and Portland split the points in a result that did little to separate two of the league’s leading sides. Washington, meanwhile, further strengthened its place near the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over expansion side Denver, thanks to Italian wonderkid Sofia Cantore’s 61st-minute strike.

With so many clubs bunched closely together in the standings, every point now carries extra value as the playoff race heats up. As the gap between the contenders keeps narrowing, GOAL ranks all 16 teams...

16 Chicago Stars

Prior ranking: 16

Result: Lost 1-0 vs Orlando Pride

Ramifications: Chicago showed they can remain competitive against one of the league's best teams in the Pride, but they suffered another defeat, taking that total to 12 losses so far this season.

15 Racing Louisville

Prior ranking: 15

Result: Won 2-1 vs Angel City

Ramifications: Racing Louisville secured one of the weekend’s, and the club’s, most important wins, beating a higher-ranked Angel City side and showing the kind of resilience that has at times been missing this season.

14 Kansas City Current

Prior ranking: 12

Result: Lost 1-0 vs Boston Legacy

Ramifications: Kansas City endured another frustrating result, losing a tight game against Boston. They were clearly missing Temwa Chawinga, but a championship-calibre side needs more than one player to consistently find the net.

13 Denver Summit

Prior ranking: 11

Result: Lost 1-0 vs Washington Spirit

Ramifications: A one-goal defeat to Washington Spirit is hardly a disaster, but Denver Summit FC need to start converting close matches into points if they want to join San Diego Wave FC and Bay FC as expansion teams that made the playoffs in their first seasons.

12 Boston Legacy

Prior ranking: 13

Result: Won 1-0 vs Kansas City Current

Ramifications: Boston collected one of their most significant wins of the season, grinding out a result against a Kansas City side. Casey Murphy was outstanding in goal and kept the Current frustrated in attack.

11 Bay FC

Prior ranking: 9

Result: Lost 1-0 vs Houston Dash

Ramifications: Bay FC’s momentum was checked after Linda Ullmark’s stoppage-time winner ended the club’s three-match unbeaten run. Bay created chances and forced Jane Campbell into seven saves, but its failure to convert left it exposed to Houston’s late breakthrough.

10 Houston Dash

Prior ranking: 12

Result: Won 1-0 vs Bay FC

Ramifications: Houston picked up a valuable three points in a tight contest, showing the defensive discipline and composure required to win close games. While the attack did not completely overwhelm Bay FC, the Dash’s ability to defend a lead and keep a clean sheet is a positive sign. Jane Campbell was excellent in goal, making seven saves on the night.

9 Orlando Pride

Prior ranking: 8

Result: Won 1-0 vs Chicago Stars

Ramifications: A narrow win over Chicago may not have been the most dominant display, but the Pride’s ability to stay organised, protect a lead and take three points is exactly what keeps them in the mix and in the hunt for the playoffs.

8 Angel City

Prior ranking: 6

Result: Lost 2-1 vs Racing Louisville

Ramifications: Angel City FC finally had a chance to build some momentum, but a defeat to a Racing Louisville FC side desperate for points only highlighted the club’s ongoing inconsistency, especially its inability to finish off tight matches. Angel City remain a talented side with plenty of upside, but this result will likely send the club down the rankings as the middle of the table continues to tighten.

7 North Carolina Courage

Prior ranking: 5

Result: Lost 4-1 vs Utah Royals

Ramifications: The Courage suffered a major setback after being outplayed in a one-sided defeat to Utah. Although the result does not erase the progress they have made this season, conceding four goals exposed defensive weaknesses that need to be fixed quickly.

6 Seattle Reign

Prior ranking: 10

Result: Won 2-0 vs San Diego Wave

Ramifications: Seattle Reign FC produced one of the weekend’s biggest statement wins, delivering a composed performance at both ends of the pitch to beat San Diego Wave FC. After an uneven spell, the Reign finally have a signature result to build on as they push towards the playoff spots.

5 San Diego Wave

Prior ranking: 3

Result: Lost 2-0 vs Seattle Reign

Ramifications: San Diego went into the weekend with a chance to strengthen its standing among the league’s best, but a flat display against an in-form Seattle side raises some concerns. The Wave struggled to create regular chances in the final third and were punished by a disciplined Reign defence.

4 Portland Thorns

Prior ranking: 7

Result: 2-2 Draw vs Gotham FC

Ramifications: Portland Thorns FC continue to show they can trouble elite defences, but consistency remains the biggest question as they move through a crowded playoff race. Taking a point from Gotham FC pushes the Thorns back towards the top tier of these rankings. Portland sits fifth in the league standings with 28 points, one behind San Diego Wave FC.

3 Utah Royals

Prior ranking: 4

Result: Won 4-1 vs North Carolina Courage

Ramifications: Utah delivered one of the weekend’s most emphatic performances, overpowering North Carolina with a clinical attacking display. A four-goal outing against a strong opponent underlines that the Royals are more than capable of competing with the league’s best and may even be able to secure a playoff place sooner rather than later.

2 Gotham FC

Prior ranking: 1

Result: 2-2 Draw vs Portland Thorns

Ramifications: Taking a point against another title contender is not a bad result, though the Bats missed a chance to make a statement in a marquee fixture. They remain near the top, but the door is open for the teams behind them to close the gap after another weekend without a signature win. Much of the attention for Gotham, however, was on Sam Kerr, who scored her first goal since returning to Gotham and the NWSL.

1 Washington Spirit

Prior ranking: 2

Result: Won 1-0 vs Denver Summit

Ramifications: The Spirit were rarely troubled defensively, and Sofia Cantore’s 61st-minute goal was enough to secure all three points at Audi Field. It was not their most dominant performance, but it reinforced why they remain in the title race: even when they are not at their best in attack, they keep collecting points.
