Sony Kumamoto Semiconductor Plant Shutdown Japan: Sony Semiconductor Solutions said on Wednesday it has temporarily suspended operations at its Kumamoto Technology Center after a powerful earthquake struck the Kumamoto region of Japan. The company is assessing possible damage to the plant and production lines.
There was no major loss in other technology centers
Sony said there were no reports of any major damage at its Nagasaki, Oita and Kagoshima technology centers. Also, there is no report of any injury to any employee present at these centers at the time of the earthquake.
Production at Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s plant in Kikuyo town was halted immediately after the earthquake, which struck at 4:27 pm local time on Tuesday, according to the company.
Plant and equipment are being assessed
The company said it was continuing to assess the impact of the quake on buildings and production equipment at the Kumamoto plant. However, no timeline has been given for when operations will resume.
13 people died in 7.1 magnitude earthquake
The disruption follows a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan’s Kumamoto region on Tuesday. According to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, 13 people died in this earthquake. Takaichi told reporters that many people were still waiting for rescue. They will use all available resources to save and provide relief to as many people as possible.
Search continues for people trapped under debris
Meanwhile, rescue teams continued to search for people trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings, while officials assessed the damage caused by the earthquake.

Sony Semiconductor Solutions is a leading supplier of image sensors and other semiconductor components used in consumer electronics, automobile and industrial sectors.
Jaishankar gave a message of support

He wrote on the social media platform X that the news of the earthquake in Japan’s Kumamoto province caused deep concern.
