A 25-year-old professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead inside his campus accommodation on Wednesday, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Deepak Reddy, a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering Department. Originally from Hyderabad, he was staying alone in a staff quarter on the IIT Kharagpur campus.

According to police, Deepak Reddy’s body was recovered from Room No. 2BR-14 in the institute’s staff residential quarters. Officers from the Hijli outpost, under Kharagpur Town Police Station, reached the location after receiving information about the incident.

The body was immediately taken to B.C. Roy Hospital at IIT Kharagpur, where doctors declared him dead. Police have begun an investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading to his death.

Investigators are looking into all aspects of the case, including whether the professor had been experiencing mental health issues. Since he lived alone in the staff accommodation, officers are collecting evidence and speaking with people connected to him as part of the inquiry.

The police have not yet disclosed any further findings, and the investigation is continuing.

The latest incident comes just three months after two separate student deaths at IIT Kharagpur.

On April 28, the body of 22-year-old engineering student Soham Haldar was recovered from the campus. Soham, a resident of Shalbagan in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district, was found after security personnel became suspicious when he did not open the door throughout the morning.

Earlier, on April 18, a 21-year-old third-year Mechanical Engineering student reportedly died after jumping from a balcony.

With another death reported on the campus in a short span of time, police are continuing their investigation into the professor’s death. Authorities have not yet released any official statement regarding the cause of death.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the need for a thorough inquiry into such cases and support systems for members of the institute’s community. Further details are expected after the police complete their preliminary investigation.
