New Delhi, July 29 - The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) organized a protest at the Faculty of Technology on Wednesday, opposing the demand for explanations from 34 teachers who were absent during the first hour and a half of the new academic session. DUTA criticized the memorandum issued to the teachers as 'arbitrary', 'stigmatizing', and 'oppressive', calling for its immediate withdrawal. This demonstration took place just a day after the commencement of the new academic year at Delhi University (DU).
The Faculty of Technology had instructed the 34 teachers who were absent from 9 AM to 10:30 AM on the first day of the 2026-27 academic session to provide a signed written explanation by 5 PM the same day. The memorandum stated that their absence during such a 'significant academic opportunity' was taken seriously, warning that failure to comply or provide a satisfactory response could lead to disciplinary action.
The memorandum indicated, 'Failure to submit an explanation within the stipulated time or providing an unsatisfactory explanation will be considered a serious administrative lapse and may be referred to the competent authority for appropriate action under the relevant provisions of Delhi University's rules and regulations.'
DUTA, in a letter to the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, demanded the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the memorandum, alleging that it violates the dignity of teachers and principles of natural justice. The teachers' organization labeled the communication from the Dean's office as 'entirely inappropriate', arguing that it presumes guilt before verifying the facts. DUTA stated, 'This memorandum is inherently stigmatizing.'
By warning teachers of disciplinary action and demanding signed, detailed written explanations, the memorandum is based on the presumption that the concerned teachers have committed an error. DUTA President V.S. Negi remarked that it is 'extremely ironic and unfortunate' that this memorandum was issued on the occasion of Guru Purnima. The association has vowed to continue the protest until the memorandum is withdrawn unconditionally, urging the university administration to uphold the dignity of teachers instead of resorting to 'oppressive measures.'
