Wi-Fi 8: Although the rollout of Wi-Fi 7 is not yet complete, work has already begun on its next-generation successor. Wi-Fi 8 will focus on stability alongside improvements in speed.
Wi-Fi 8: Even though Wi-Fi 6 is currently the standard in most places and Wi-Fi 7 routers have yet to reach many consumers, testing for a new wireless standard—Wi-Fi 8—has already commenced. It is expected to launch in about two years, around 2028. TP-Link, the Chinese company conducting the tests, states that the technology is moving from the conceptual stage toward real-world implementation. As a next-generation technology, it will offer improved speeds, but the primary focus will be on reliability; the emphasis is shifting from merely increasing speed to ensuring a stable connection. Let’s explore this in more detail.
What is Wi-Fi 8?
It is a new wireless standard currently undergoing testing. It will utilize technologies introduced with Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, such as the 6GHz spectrum, 320MHz channels, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). While the new standard will deliver faster speeds, a key priority will be maintaining reliability in high-traffic areas. The industry refers to this concept as Ultra-High Reliability (UHR). To achieve UHR, it will employ a mix of existing and new technologies. It will feature a new version of multi-access point coordination technology, allowing access points in high-traffic zones to share resources, thereby enhancing both speed and stability.
New Technologies to be Used in Wi-Fi 8
Several technologies will be working behind the scenes in Wi-Fi 8. It will enable access points to adjust their transmit power using Coordinated Spatial Reuse (Co-SR). Similarly, with the help of Coordinated Time Division Multiple Access (Co-TDMA), access points will be able to share transmissions within reserved time slots. Coordinated Beamforming will also be incorporated to enhance signal quality. Regarding legacy technologies, it will leverage Wi-Fi 6’s Target Wake Time (TWT) and Wi-Fi 7’s Restricted Target Wake Time (R-TWT).
How will Wi-Fi 8 ensure stable connections?
To reduce latency and improve network connectivity in high-traffic areas—such as apartment buildings, airports, and shopping centers—it will utilize several spectrum-efficiency technologies. The first of these is Dynamic Sub-band Operation (DSO). This gives access points the option to split wide channels (like the 320MHz channel), allowing them to serve multiple devices simultaneously. It will also employ Non-Primary Channel Access (NPCA), enabling devices to access secondary channels when the primary channel is unavailable; this ensures data flow continues uninterrupted even if the primary channel is not accessible. The new standard also introduces a "Single Mobility Domain"—a novel concept. In current Wi-Fi versions, when a client device attempts to connect to a different access point, the connection to the initial access point is severed, causing a slight delay. With this new concept, however, a device will be able to connect to another access point without dropping its existing connection.
What are the benefits of Wi-Fi 8?
The new standard is being designed with AI-powered systems, industrial automation, and robotics in mind. It aims to resolve the issues currently encountered with these technologies in existing versions. Additionally, it will be able to provide a stable connection—with speeds approximately 25% faster—even in crowded areas or locations with heavy internet traffic. This means issues like connection drops will be avoided, even when multiple devices are connected to a single router.
When will Wi-Fi 8 be available for use?
Wi-Fi 8 is expected to receive approval in the first half of 2028. Once approved, supported devices will begin hitting the market. Asus showcased a Wi-Fi 8 hardware concept at CES 2026, but the wait for certified routers and client devices will continue until 2028. As for India, it might take a little longer for the new standard to arrive here.
